Ideas to Support Student Learning During the Winter Break

Although students have a two-week winter break, it is important for students to continue to read and practice their math facts. Below is a list of other ideas to support students' academic growth.

  • Read. Grandparents, aunts, and uncles are excellent listeners and enjoy listening to children read.
  • Practice math facts.
  • Begin working on your project for the STEM Expo and/or Invention Convention scheduled for January 31.
  • Visit commonsensemedia.org and go to “Family Guides” in the top green bar. You’ll find lists of apps by grade level and subject area, along with book, movie, and creative art project ideas listed by age.
  • Practice your fractions while cooking and baking.
  • Visit code.org and learn to code.
  • Write letters to family members.
  • Keep a journal each day spent away from school. Use a device to take a picture and then write about the event or people in the picture.
  • Write a story from the perspective of an elf or reindeer.
  • Learn more about animals who live in cold climates.
  • Research something you are interested in and passionate about.
  • Calculate the number of miles your family travels.
  • Designate a treasurer to add up the money spent on gas or gifts.
  • Build a gingerbread house. Measure the house. Count and sort the candy items used for the house.
  • Volunteer as a family to support our local community or charities.
  • Complete Random Acts of Kindness for people at school, in your neighborhood, or family. We all have ways to give to others that do not include materialistic items. Be creative and thoughtful.

Arlington Drive Traffic Advisory

Beginning Tuesday, November 28, there will be additional road construction along Arlington Drive. This construction is expected to take about a month to complete. All Davis Magnet School visitors and families are encouraged to give yourself extra time to get into our parking lots as a result of this traffic. Please plan accordingly for morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up of your child.

Be advised of the following:

  • All westbound traffic from Newport Blvd. will continue as normal through to Fairview Road.

  • All eastbound traffic from Fairview Road will be stopped at our east end driveway. No through traffic will be allowed past our east end driveway located by the track.

Davis Magnet School Administration and staff are working with the City of Costa Mesa and CMPD to ensure a safe and efficient environment for our families. It is important to continue to follow all traffic rules, plan accordingly, and remain alert when driving around our school.

Thank you for your continued support and patience during this construction. Please contact our front office with any questions or concerns.

Davis Magnet School in the News!

One of the many unique learning opportunities provided at Davis Magnet School was featured in the news! Our 6th grade Medical Residency Day allowed for students to combine science, math, and technology in a really fun way that applies to real-life scenarios.

Thanks to Hoag Hospital's leading neurosurgeon, Dr. Robert Loius, our 6th graders got to experience a brain surgery using virtual reality right in their own classroom. Check out the stories below to learn more!

Davis Magnet School Students Excel in Academics and Athletics

Are you interested in becoming a part of the Davis Magnet School family?

Davis Magnet School is a math, science, and technology magnet school located in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. We are not your typical neighborhood school, but serve students from all across the district. We focus on providing our students hands-on learning opportunities with a special emphasis in math, science, and technology while teaching all of the California content standards.

Below are some helpful details as to how students are admitted to Davis.

  • All attendance is based upon a computerized lottery that is administered at the district office.
  • The deadline to apply is typically from February 15 to March 15. The link will be posted on the top of the Davis Magnet School website. It is not first come, first serve but all new students must have a submitted application prior to the deadline listed on the application.
  • The lottery is typically scheduled in May for the following school year.  Parents receive an email in May notifying them if their child was accepted to Davis or the wait list number their child received.
  • Current Davis siblings have priority in the lottery.

If you are interested in learning more about Davis Magnet School, please consider attending one of the monthly tours hosted by the principal, Mrs. Flores. The tours are scheduled for the second Friday of the month at 9:00 a.m. beginning in October. They usually last about an hour and best suited just for parents. There is no need to RSVP, but simply arrive in the front office by 9:00 a.m.

Any attendance, lottery, or tour questions may be answered by our front office staff at 714-424-7930. We thank you for your interest in Davis Magnet School and look forward to meeting you.

Our Mission is Learning!

At Davis Magnet School, our mission is learning. In order for students to learn, they have to be at school ALL day long. Our school day is scheduled from 8:15 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. On Wednesdays, all boys and girls attend school from 8:15 a.m. to 1:20 p.m. Please plan accordingly and make sure that your child is in their classroom line at 8:15 a.m., promptly when flag deck will begin. Any student not in their line at the ringing of the 8:15 a.m. bell will be marked tardy. Also, it is very disruptive to student learning when students leave for a portion of time in the middle of the day or at anytime prior to the final bell.  Every minute of learning is precious and we want our students at Davis Magnet School learning during the school day. Please schedule appointments before or after the school day. With your support and help, we can work together as a team towards our mission.
